Kaylee Muthart, a student from Anderson, South Carolina, gained international attention following a harrowing incident in 2018 when she removed her own eyes during a severe psychotic episode triggered by crystal meth. Despite the profound changes this has brought to her life, Kaylee recently expressed that she has no regrets about her current circumstances, even after losing her job.
Kaylee began experimenting with marijuana in high school, which eventually led her to escalate her drug use from smoking to injecting methamphetamine. Although her mother successfully urged her to enter rehab, Kaylee chose to seek one last high, resulting in the devastating event.
While under the influence, she became convinced by hallucinations that she needed to “sacrifice something important to right the world.” She vividly recounted the traumatic experience, saying, “I got on my hands and knees, pounding the ground and praying, ‘Why me? Why do I have to do this?’” Driven by this delusion, she painfully forced her fingers into her eyes, twisting and pulling until they came out.
A church pastor discovered her in a state of distress, screaming that she wanted to “see the light.” She horrifyingly described how the pastor found her holding her eyes in her hands, still partially attached.
The incident left Kaylee permanently blind, but it also marked a turning point that enabled her to overcome her drug addiction and begin rebuilding her life. Eager to support herself and continue her education, Kaylee took a job washing dishes at a local restaurant.
Recently, however, she revealed that she was let go from that job for taking food from the kitchen to feed a hungry cat and its eight kittens. Despite this setback, Kaylee insists she has no regrets.
Reflecting on her dismissal, she explained that she prioritized compassion over compliance, feeling she could not leave the cats without food. “Being fired never feels good, but I could walk away knowing that I did what I believed in my heart was right,” she stated with confidence.
Although she faces challenges due to the loss of her financial independence, Kaylee remains optimistic and at peace with her decisions. Her positivity comes from knowing she has stayed true to her values, saying, “I am positive every day of my life because I am peaceful, knowing that I live without regretting my choice.”
Kaylee also mentioned that she now wears prosthetic eyes to appear “more normal” to others. Despite facing difficulties, especially with sleep, she firmly believes that her current life, free from drug dependence, is far better. “I’m happier now than I was before all this happened. I’d rather be blind than dependent on drugs,” she concluded.
